In his exhibition “Random Ceremony” Corey McCorkle makes a bridge between art nouveau and religion (or wider: a way of living). The central work is a large replica of the staircase of Victor Horta’s “Maison du Peuple”. This architectural monument by Victor Horta opened in 1899 in Brussels and is an icon of Art Nouveau architecture and socialism. In 1965, despite strong international protest, it was taken down. The title of the sculpture of McCorkle is “Rouge”, so politically red. The white staircase, that almost looks “immaterial”, has marxist, atheïstic and materialistic connotations, while McCorkle redefines each step as a new transition.
